Maya, our beautiful Xolo foster from Hope's Haven is gone. She died Wednesday night at her home, cradled in the arms of her new mom. She slipped out the front door. It happened so quickly. The driver never even saw her. There was no sound. Her little outfits were everywhere. They had been preparing for a weekend trip. Her first big get-away. She was the best-dressed dog in Georgia! Her new food dishes were in the kitchen. Treats and toys filled the table. Her new fancy dog bed still had the outline of her little body on it. How could she be gone? We took her body to be cremated. We brought her favorite t-shirt, pink with “Princess” written on it. Picked out an urn, purple and pink flowers with blue decorative trim. It matched her collar. Fit for a queen, or a princess.
3 months. That’s how long her rescuer had her. Three months to heal the wounds left by her abuser. Physical, mental, emotional wounds that never should have been there.
3 months. That’s how long we had her. Three months to heal the scars left by her abuser. Three months to learn love. To learn that the touch of a hand can be a good thing. To learn that there’s always a warm bed waiting, a full food dish, a face to kiss, someone to love.
10 days. That’s how long her new mom had. Ten days to change someone’s life completely. For ten days she was the center of the world. She knew devotion. She knew contentment. She knew love. For the rest of us ten days seems so small, but for Maya it was a lifetime.
