Sponsor Me - Meet Kimo

Kimo Meet Kimo! This precious little guy came into Hope’s Haven with severe cataracts. He is completely blind in his right eye (hyper-mature) and has lost 75% of the sight in his left eye. He only sees light and shadows but uses his nose and gets around pretty well for his disability. We want to give Kimo the gift of sight.
Kimo is turning six-years-old this month. He is neutered, UTD on all vaccinations, he has tested negative for Heartworm and is on Heartworm prevention. He is a large Chinese Crested at 20lbs, but still a small dog and very beautiful with his flashy white furnishings. He had an ear surgery that has left his ear dropped, but we feel this just adds to his playful character. Kimo
Kimo Kimo was released to Hope’s Haven with issues of biting. When he arrived at his foster home he was excruciatingly itchy. He was scratching himself to the point of bleeding and his skin was dry and red. After a trip to the veterinary for a wellness check up we found that Kimo was suffering from a severe ear infection in both ears.
Kimo has been switched to a very strict diet, cutting out the majority of foods that are known to cause allergies. Between treating the ear infection and his new diet, Kimo’s skin cleared up in a matter of days and he has been become extremely happy and playful. His foster Mom attempted to switch him over to the high quality food that she feeds her resident Chinese Cresteds and Kimo broke out within 24 hours. He is back on the food that we know will not cause an allergic reaction and he will continue to require a special diet for the rest of his life. Kimo

Update for 26 June, 2007

Today was Kimo’s surgery. I had such high hopes and was completely devastated to find out that Kimo’s right eye had complete retinal detachment and was absolutely unrepairable. I was angry knowing that if his eyes had been cared for in a timely manner it could have been saved. Dr. Sullivan was very quick to gently chide my disappointment. “Why focus on this when his left eye was repaired and seemingly working just fine.” Kimo didn’t seem to mind and his ability to see was instantaneous. His demeanor was significantly different as he just looked and looked at everything soaking it all in. What a difference indeed. Kimo is calm and definitely more centered. His jumpiness and worry seem to be completely gone. Kimo has undergone an amazing transformation.

Update for 10 July, 2007

Everything is looking great. Kimo is wiggly for his eye drops but he will sit for them especially if he knows he gets a tasty treat afterwards. I am overjoyed that we are going from three different drops 2-3 times a day in different eyes to one drop in each eye once a day. It was very confusing; we had to keep a schedule on the refrigerator. Last check up will be in 4-6 weeks and then it will be time for Kimo to find his forever home!

Update for 11 August, 2007

Kimo went to The Seattle Humane Society Walk for the Animals. What a ham. He played it up for everyone, getting his picture taken and posing for the TV cameras. He greeted everyone with a wagging tail and sweet disposition. Strangers gathered around him and everyone was petting him kids, adults, men women and lots of other dogs. He was friendly to everyone and soaked up all the attention he could. What a far cry from the grumpy growling Mr. Bites A Lot we heard so much about before his surgery. Kimo loves the love and when in public doesn’t have an ounce of fear or aggression.

Update for 28 August, 2007

Kimo had his final appointment with Dr Sullivan who is just so impressed with Kimo’s recovery. Dr Sullivan is also amazed at the transformation of Kimo’s personality as well. He truly is a different dog with a completely different attitude. His eye has healed and looks super fantastic. Kimo is so ready for his new home.

A special thanks to Dr. Thomas Sullivan and the staff at the Animal Eye Clinic for giving Kimo his sight back and of course lots of licks and love to all the wonderful fabulous people who sponsored Kimo and made his surgery possible. You all have given Kimo a magnificent gift and a whole new outlook on life (pun intended). He is forever grateful as is his foster mommy. Thank you!
