Miles has been adopted (13 May, 2006)!UPDATE
Well, so far so good. He rested for quite a while on the couch this afternoon. He did a lot of pacing around the house too. I am sure as soon as he gets used to the smells he will feel better. We were just snuggled on the couch together. It seems so strange that he isn't cold. Tessie is always cold. Thank you so much for fostering him and for bringing him to us. We are very happy to have him and a couple of new outfits came for him today!
Thanks again!
UPDATE (15 May, 2006)
Oh, that little monkey is so funny. His newest thing is run as fast as he can around the table. He runs and runs and runs. Then he will run into the living room and up on the couch. He was even doing a little bit of the 'Crestie Spin' for me on the deck when I was home for lunch.
Tessie seems not so irritated with him. She was laying near him last night on the couch. They put their noses together and did a little sniffing but no growling, which I saw as progress. Tucker is still being a butthead, but Miles just runs off with his tail wagging. I feel bad for him because he really wants to play and no one will play with him. In time, I am sure it will be fine. Even though it was a rainy yesterday afternoon we did go to the dog park with my sister. She has a Viszla and I thought maybe they could run together but he was too busy peeing on things to play. He did run a little with Tucker. I am hoping trips to the dog park will get Miles and Tucker to become better friends. Miles does ride in the car really well.
It's so strange not to have a freezing dog. He is so warm and not shaking like Tessie. He isn't sleeping with us, he sleeps in the chair. I hope that when everyone becomes friends he will snuggle in with us, but again he doesn't seem like he feels left out. He is such a happy little guy. He seems to like Gary too. Saturday night when Gary got home he barked and growled at him but hasn't done it since. He has snuggled up on him too.
UPDATE (17 May, 2006)
Miles does running circles but then sometimes he will just pace like a Tiger at the zoo. It is almost like he can't make up his mind what to do, so he paces until he figures it out. I have started giving him something to do when he starts pacing. He really likes his green frog and that is a pretty good distraction. I checked into obedience classes for him at PetSmart but they don't start until later in June but I think I am going to try to get him into one of those classes. I am hoping it will help him feel more confident and it would be nice if he would come and sit.
We went to the dog park again last night. It was a lot nicer than yesterday. Boy, can that dog run. He looks so beautiful running with his hair flowing out behind him. He likes to jump too. Millie would take off after her ball and he would go after her and jump her back and forth while she was running. He may need to become an agility dog!
UPDATE (4 June, 2006)
Well we started obedience tonight. We got there and he was the perfect dog. The lady kept pointing Miles out because he was sitting so nicely and focusing the way he should and he walked so well on his leash. Yeah and then we got home and it was like he had no idea what I was talking about with sitting. Guess we have some work to do. She did suggest we think about training him as a therapy dog - I might have to think about that one. I think that would be fun!!
Overall things are still going well. He is such a nut. He seems to be having a good time here. He loves to go for walks and got to go out into the big dog park this week because he is coming so well when called that I can trust him out there.
I had to take him to the vet on Monday because he was limping. He somehow had a cut on his foot with the start of an infection. They put him on antibiotics and by that night he was already walking better, but at least now he is in their system so we won't miss any of his shots when they come due.
UPDATE (15 June, 2006)
I just wanted to send in my official one month update. I would hate for you to come take Miles from us for noncompliance. He is doing really well. The more he has attached to me, the more afraid of Gary he has become but we are working on it. Lots of treats, lots of patience.
We had some major breakthroughs this week. Miles licked me and he came over and wanted to sleep with us. He has been sleeping in the chair upstairs. The first time it was thundering and that freaked him out but then the last three nights he has come over wanting up just to sleep with us. He doesn't stay all night but at least he comes over.
He went back to the vet with an infected foot again. They decided that he has allergies. He is on Benadryl and fish oil supplements and seems to be doing well. he has chewed on his feet since we started.
He is doing very well in obedience class. He forgets at home but he is a star in class. We can't get him to lay down but his sits are coming quicker. The instructor thinks that maybe agility would be a good place for him to get over his shyness. They would never believe he is our wild thing by the way he is in class. He is a total nut around here. He is always making us laugh. He's quite a good snuggler too! He is quite a joy and we are very glad he is part of our family!
UPDATE (26 July, 2006)
I just wanted to let you know that Miles graduated from basic obedience this week. He also received the award for most improved dog. The last night we got to try out some of the agility equipment and he went through the tunnel and was a master of the dog walk. He was wonderful. We are so proud of him. I signed Millie up for a therapy dog class at the same facility and they told me to bring Miles with her so he could continue with all the progress he has made in becoming more confident. The ladies that run the training facility just love him and are so willing to give him any help they can. The agility class doesn't start until October but we are going to get him signed up for that. He really seems to like it. Still won't let strangers touch him without freaking out but he is letting them stand near him which is an improvement for him.
UPDATE (11 January, 2007)
I just thought I would send you an update to let you know that Miles is doing well. He finished his agility class, which he loved and now we are in flyball. We have only been to two classes but he is warming up to the place very nicely. He is still spooky in public but from obedience this summer when he would only sit behind me and shake to, whereas now after two classes of flyball he will let strangers touch him. He is such a silly happy boy.
We are anxious for summer so he can be naked again and get rid of his icky shade of winter that he has taken on. He was so beautiful when we got him but the lack of sun has caused some noticible fading, althought we can hardly complain about the weather, we took a trip to the dog park last saturday because it was so nice.
UPDATE (13 May, 2008)
Did you know that today is my second year in my home? I just wanted to write and let you know that I am doing well. I am still unsure of strangers but once I have made a friend, they are forever my friend. I like to sneak up behind new people and smell them but I do not like them to touch me until I am ready. My old dachshund sister died earlier this year and my mom's heart was broken - it didn't bother me - that dog was an old grouch! So my mom decided to foster a crestie. Well, the foster thing didn't work out and now the little nut is my forever brother. He is a pretty nice brother. He likes to play. We chase each other around the yard. He is also helping me not to be afraid of as many things. I will now take food from my dad. If it is OK for murphy, it is ok for me. Thank you for being my foster mom and thank you for letting me come to live here.
PS I still get a leg in the pond once in a while but I haven't fallen in again.
